Presentation of the Herbaria

The Universities's herbaria are based at 3, Boulevard Lafayette, 63000 Clermont-Ferrand (Auvergne, France) together with those of the Clermont-Ferrand town.

Overall, the herbaria contain about 500 000 specimens which put them at the fourth national place.

The Universities's Herbaria, with approximately 430 000 specimens, is made up of : Phanerogams and vascular cryptogams.

Phanerogams and vascular cryptogams

• The General Herbarium (70 000 specimens)
  several collections (Audigier, Saint-Hilaire, Malvezin, Lavergne, Lavernhe, Dumas-Damon, Lavarenne...) and plants from most parts of the world.
• The Alleizette Herbarium (55 000 specimens)
  plants from France, Europe, the Mediterranean basin and some other continents, in particular from French ex-colonies.
• The Lamotte herbarium (40 000 specimens)
  a herbarium with historical interest from the Massif Central and other parts of France and Europe.
• The Chassagne Herbarium (32 000 specimens)
  plants from Auvergne, France, with various gender but particularly Salix spp.
• The Legrand herbarium (27 000 specimens)
  plants from the Forez, and Berry regions of France.
• The Billy herbarium (25 000 specimens)
  plants from Auvergne, Europe (especially Mediterranean Basin)
• The Loiseau herbarium (20.000 specimens)
  plants from Nivernais, Auvergne, rivers Loire and Allier, France and Africa, Poaceae, genus Xanthium, Quercus,...
• The Lassimone herbarium (14 000 specimens)
  plants from the Bourbonnais region.

Computerization

The computerization of the herbaria is currently only partial. Realized in partnership between the Ministry for Research, the Blaise Pascal University, the University of Auvergne, the Conseil General of the Puy-de-dôme, Clermont-Community and the Town of Clermont-Ferrand, this program resulted in the seizure of 100,000 herbarium's sheets at the end of 2011.

Seized information relates to in priority the herbaria “General”, D' Alleizette, Chassagne, Lamotte, Billy for the vascular plants and the general herbarium of bryophytes. The plant species protected or threatened in France are the subject of a thorough data-processing seizure.

The Database of the University Herbaria was restructured in 2008 within the framework of program LIFEGRID, by integrating there a cartographic shutter and a database images. Computerization is carried out on the model of the Base SONERAT of which the structure was pleasantly placed at the disposal of the University by the National Natural history museum of Paris.
